Year 8 Ypres Trip - September 2025

On Friday 26th September, a group of our Year 8 students had the incredible opportunity to visit Ypres, exploring key sites and memorials from the First World War. At both a German war memorial, Hooge Crater memorial, and Tyne Cot,  students were struck by the scale of sacrifice, reflecting thoughtfully on the lives lost in battle.

At the Hooge Crater museum, students explored wartime artefacts up close and even walked through a reconstructed trench. This led to lively discussions about the benefits and drawbacks of the trenches built by both the British and German forces. Students were inquisitive and engaged with the discussions that were being led by our amazing Anglia Tour guide.

At Tyne Cot Cemetery, Mr Hogg delivered a heartfelt remembrance service. He then invited students to find the grave of a soldier they felt a connection with. It was truly inspiring to watch them spend a quiet, independent moment reflecting, showing respect and empathy that was both powerful and moving. Students spent some time looking through the register of names to see if they could see their own surnames, who may have been potential relatives.

The trip brought history to life in a way that a classroom alone cannot. We hope it gave students a lasting appreciation for the sacrifices made during WW1, and that they enjoyed every moment of this unforgettable experience. Our students were exemplary throughout the trip. Their curiosity, respect, and engagement were remarkable, asking thoughtful questions and showing genuine interest in the stories around them. It was moving to see them gaining new knowledge and developing a deeper understanding of the realities of WW1.
