How to improve your memory

How to improve your Memory:

Revision is hard! It take time and effort but if you have a plan and top tips to help you along the way it can become easier.

The Revision Techniques below are great to help you prepare for your exams and help you learn and remember key information so that you can get the best grade possible. There are 6 strategies top choose from...try them all only use one but they are tried and tested to help students achieve excellent results.

The following resources and ideas will help you use spaced practice when revising for your exams

  • Spaced learning (also known as disturbed practice) refers to the theory that practising at regular intervals is more effective that practising all at once. For example, practising to ride a bike for ten minutes per day over 10 days (100 minutes) is more effective that practising for 100 minutes non-stop.

The following resources and ideas will help you use Dual Coding when revising for your exams

  • Dual coding is about using different learning materials to learn better; it is about combining verbal material with visuals in your teaching in a way that ensures both the visual element, and the verbal element complement each other.

The following resources and ideas will help you use concrete examples when revising for your exams

  • Concrete examples are specific, real-life examples used to illustrate an idea. They can be useful in helping participants grasp abstract concepts because they present the conceptual elements in a recognisable context. Concrete examples can be verbal descriptions, stories, actual objects, and models.

The following resources and ideas will help you use Interleaving when revising for your exams

  • Interleaving is a learning technique that involves mixing together different topics or forms of practice, in order to facilitate learning. For example, if a student uses interleaving while preparing for an exam, they can mix up different types of questions, rather than study only one type of question at a time.

The following resources and ideas will help you use retrieval practice when revising for your exams

  • Retrieval Practice is a strategy in which bringing information to mind enhances and boosts learning. Deliberately recalling information forces us to pull our knowledge “out” and examine what we know.

The following resources and ideas will help you use elaboration when revising for your exams

  • Elaboration interrogation is a great tool to promote discussion between students. They can ask each other questions, and quiz each other.” Student questions might include inquiries like, “how did your group arrive at your conclusion? Why did your group choose to do X?
