Model United Nations December 2024
On Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th December, 15 students travelled by train to Mulberry School for Girls in Whitechapel to take part in the Model United Nations conference (MUN). Upon arrival everyone signed in and then joined with the other delegates from numerous schools for an opening assembly to welcome everyone and to hear from a special guest about the use of Artificial Intelligence.
After the talk the students split into their separate committees where nine of the groups discussed the use of AI and then three higher committees spoke about the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Many discussions were had, and solutions come to over the course of the two days resulting in each committee writing and passing a number of position papers. To conclude the conference, all delegates met in the Main Hall again to hear from three other guest speakers about their work within MUN and then the awards ceremony begun. All students worked tirelessly and three of de Stafford’s delegates earned awards. Congratulations to Charlotte W, Owen W-M and James E.
Charlotte says, “I was based within UNESCOS 6 where we discussed “AI and systematic prejudice in women and girls”. We debated the issues that were raised and how we could provide solutions. By the end of the 2 days, we provided two resolution papers one of which I was the main sponsor/contributor. During the awards ceremony we had a few speakers before I received the award of “Best delegate” in my committee which I am very proud of. Overall, the experience was so incredible, and I enjoyed it so much. One of the highlights was getting to talk to and befriend so many incredible and kind people that I am so glad to have met and will forever stay in my memory of MUN and shaped my experience there. I also loved the chance for me to become independent and develop my public speaking skills and confidence as well as the fun memories I made with those with me. I really hope that I can continue my participation in MUN when I move into Reigate college.”
Eden G also says, “I love Model UN! It gives me a chance to debate, share ideas and find solutions to real world problems, it makes my voice feel heard. This was my third conference, and along the way, I have forged multiple friendships and had the opportunity to meet a plethora of young people from a wide range of different backgrounds. I cannot wait to continue with Model UN at my college of choice, Reigate, as this is now an important part of my academic life.”
