de Stafford School Remembers
On Saturday 10 November 2018, representatives from each year group at de Stafford School planted commemorative poppies in St Lawrence's churchyard, one for each of the fallen servicemen of WW1 of the Caterham area. Head Boy, Christopher Box and Prefect, Jess Grant, read the names of those who gave their lives and planted the final white poppy as a symbol of hope for future peace.
Year 9 students, Katie Conway and Sahan Barot attended the service at St Luke’s Church on Armistice Day at 11.00am, to lay a wreath on behalf of our school community. St Luke's has strong links with the R.A.F and The War Graves Commission who look after the graves of those killed in action during the last war. There is a 'Book of Remembrance' recording the names of the R.A.F. personnel of the Battle of Britain who served at nearby R.A.F. Kenley.
“Thank you for supporting the event on Saturday. Your students were a credit to both the school and themselves. Please thank Jess and Christopher in particular for their beautiful delivery of the names on their lists and for exactly the right gravitas when planting the white poppy for peace. Their confidence at their age is a joy to see! My thanks to you all for a huge contribution to a solemn and very moving day for the whole of our community in Caterham”. John Orrick, Councillor, Caterham on the Hill Parish Council
Later that Sunday, Head Boy, Christopher Box and Deputy Head Girl, Iara Fernandes, joined local groups to lay a second wreath at the R.A.F. Kenley Tribute sited at Kenley Aerodome.
